LUKE Mackney was appointed as an assistant referee to the top of the table National Youth League clash between Gold Coast United and Central Coast on Sunday at Southport on the Gold Coast.
The match, attended by billionaire owner of Gold Coast United, Clive Palmer, and A-League coaches Miron Bleiberg (United) and Lawrie McKinna (Central Coast) was won 5-2 by the powerful Central Coast team which included several Junior Socceroos.
Mackney joined some of Australia’s most promising soccer referees in the match, including Alan Milliner, who last week refereed his first A-League fixture and is being touted as a potential World Cup referee, Adam Kersey, who went to the National School Championships in Perth with Mackney in August, and Michael Sams, a promising young referee from Brisbane.
This appointment is confirmation of the high regard of Mackney.
He was given a glowing report after the match by the FFA Referee’s inspector who complimented Mackney’s judgement and communication with central referee Milliner on some crucial plays.
