This weekend Sarah Drake, David Henville, Tiarna Kinnear, Damien Parker and Dick Nolan flew to Canberra to officate at the largest football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, the Kanga Cup. The tournament, which is open to all accredited referee’s between the ages of 15 and 22, caters for both male and female youth players from 9 to 18 years of age and last year saw 230 teams from around Australia as well as teams from New Zealand, Malaysia, Korea and the USA.
Last year we sent four of our referees to officiate at the Kanga Cup and after receiving alot of positive feedback from those who attended we gave all of our current eligible members the opportunity to apply to attend this year. After the nominations were received our Management Committee decided to send the chosen four referees and one inspector to attend this year’s tournament. As part of the selection, the Far North Coast Referee’s have payed for each referee to fly to and from Canberra, with all meals and accommodation provided by the tournament organisers.
The tournament is an excellent opportunity for our referee’s to receive intensive coaching and inspections throughout the week and will provide them with a chance to improve their refereeing. With the decision to also send an inspector to this year’s tournament we also get the opportunity to research some new techniques to continue to work on improving and developing our current and future referee’s here on the Far North Coast.
The McDonald’s Kanga Cup runs from Sunday 12th July to Friday 17th July.
