GLEN Gibbs Signals Full-Time

This weekend will see Glen Gibbs retire from active refereeing after 30 continuous years of service. Glen has always lived locally, but spent ten years travelling to Brisbane and around the country to cover State and National fixtures. For 22 of the 30 years, Glen has refereed at the highest local Premier division level (although this level has had various other names through the years).

For ten years, Glen travelled to Brisbane every second weekend to officiate in the Queensland State League (QSL) where he refereed in one 1st Division Grand Final and was assistant in several others through the years.

It was through his outstanding performance in the QSL that Glen gained selection on the National Soccer League Assistant Referees Panel. Glen held this position for six years. At this level, Glen experienced many highlights including being assistant to Mark Shield in his first NSL game and also his first international game. Shield, who recently announced his own retirement from refereeing, has widely been regarded as Australia’s top referee, having officiated at the last two World Cups. Glen has also been an assistant referee in five international matches.

Locally, Glen has received five Referee of the Year awards, and has been referee and assistant referee in many Premier Division Grand Finals. Glen was honoured this year with the naming of the Glen Gibbs Referee Of The Year Award.

Tonight, Glen will hang his boots up after another top level fixture, as an assistant referee in the Premier Division Grand Final at Oakes Oval at 7.15pm.
